Project Overview
Summary
This class project, assigned by Kay Hoffmeister (Design Manager from Facebook Reality Labs), focuses on experimenting with AI-driven design solutions to address real-world problems.
My Part
Facilitated team progress with regular checkpoints and synchronized updates.
Crafted multiple reusable components in Figma.
Built information architecture for a clean user experience.
3D modeled a physical prototype for an AI dog collar.
Engineered an app prototype in Protopie utilizing front-end coding skills.
Optimized and integrated ChatGPT-4o API with Protopie for voice UI capabilities.
Challenge
Short Timeframe: Limited duration prevented creating a full component set and required tightly scheduled interviews, impacting research depth.
Emerging AI Design: The new field of AI design required extensive foundational research and probabilistic experimentation due to a lack of established best practices.
The Problem Background
Elderly who live alone should feel independent in their everyday living. Without the need of a caregiver or assisted living. However, accidents still occur.
Seeking assistance from emergency services can be challenging, particularly in stressful situations or when the injured individual is unable to make the call, especially if they are alone.

Final Design
Our final deliverables include two innovative products: an AI-powered voice UI dog collar and its companion mobile app.
The dog collar is equipped with advanced features, such as the ability to call 911 and notify family members in case of emergencies. Additionally, family members can interact with the collar's AI directly through the mobile app, enabling seamless communication and enhanced safety.

Research
Our team interviewed with multiple certified nurses assistants that own an Adult Family Home licensed for elderly residents and a hospital volunteer. There, we can understand more about elderly's needs

Problem statement
The aim is to enhance elderly safety, reduce the time to medical intervention, and keep family members informed, thereby improving overall emergency response and peace of mind.
Goal
RAPID RESPONSE
When an accident occurs, the product will respond in a quick manner. Notifying anybody of interest i.e. emergency services or family
SEAMLESS INTEGRATION
The user should not feel forced or uncomfortable when using the product in their daily routine.
PROMOTE INDEPENDENCE
The product should give the elder a sense of independence, allowing them to carry out their daily tasks, engage in activities, and maintain their lifestyle, without the presence of a caregiver.
SUPPORTS DAILY LIFE
When using the product, the user should feel their daily life routine becomes easier and more secured.

WHY AI COLLAR
Research has been done on the benefits of pets presence in elderly lives.
Integration of technology with animals has barely scratched the surface.
Other dog collar products are meant to regulate the animals behavior. We wanted to focus building off pre-existing habits of animals - not limiting them.
VUI
A VUI based AI collar for service animals that not only assists seniors with daily tasks but also serves as their trusted companion.
Prepared for emergencies, the companion remains vigilant for falls and the AI collar would promptly trigger an automated call for assistance when needed.
AI
Real Time Assistance captures live footage and communicates with emergency services, featuring AI-powered fall detection and monitoring of dog behavior to prevent emergencies. It enhances the connection between owners and service animals through seamless integration and intelligent detection.

Work in Progress

3D modeling of collar
I brainstormed and referenced many shapes of dog collar and decided to have a the camera on a stable surface.

UI/UX design
Our team starts to experiments on different styles and UI/UX design on Figma.

Prototype
After basic UI design on figma, I moved to protopie to implement hi-fi prototype of app. I also learned and connect chatGPT's API to the dog collar mock up.

Design system
Below are the design system for the AI collar's paired phone app and the product's structure to follow.

Conclusion
What I learned?
Defining component and design systems would not only sped up the whole workflow and design process, but also be able to keep in an unified style.
Making the interactions as intuitive as possible was a main focus. Using a smart VUI device seems natural and effortless, and builds on the trust already established between the service animal and the owner.
If I had more time...
We would investigate and research more on the interaction between AI collar and the service animal.
